Which Camino route should I choose for cycling?

It depends on your tastes and preferences, as the routes pass through towns and areas with very different terrain profiles. Here is a summary of the routes suitable for cycling the Camino de Santiago:

  • French Way: ideal for first-timers. It is the busiest route and has the most services and signposting.
  • Portuguese Way: the same applies as for the French Way.
  • Vía de la Plata: an ideal route for those who prefer a more challenging trip, as it crosses several mountain ranges and the towns are further apart. It is a very quiet route with little traffic.
  • Primitive Way: its route presents many difficulties, as it runs mostly through mountains.
  • Northern Way: its route is rolling, alternating mountain areas with valleys. It is a perfect option for reasonably fit cyclists.

Can I customize my bike route?

All our packages are tailor-made. Whether you are a regular cyclist or looking for a more relaxed experience, we can adapt the stages to your preferences.

Do I need to be in good physical shape to do the Camino by bike?

It is a sporting activity that requires regular practice, and it is advisable to be used to riding routes with hills. Prepare during the months beforehand and practise on routes with similar elevation and distance.

When is the best time to do the Camino de Santiago by bike?

The best time of year to cycle the Camino is between March and June or between September and October.

During these months the days are longer and the temperatures are mild for cycling, and you avoid the rain and even snow of the rest of the year.

July and August, on the other hand, are not the months we recommend for a cycling trip. The heat in inland areas can be intense and make the physical effort greater.

In short, if you want to enjoy the Camino, spring and autumn are the best times.

What type of bike should I choose?

You can do the trip on your own bike or rent one from our extensive fleet. Our models are serviced and insured by our partners so you can ride with complete confidence.

Depending on the route you choose, you can opt for a mountain bike, an e-bike or a road bike. However, a mountain bike is usually the most recommended option due to the terrain of the Camino.

If you are not sure which one best suits your trip, ask us. Our team will be happy to advise you and help you choose the ideal bike.

How many kilometers will I cover per day if I cycle the Camino?

Cyclists on the Camino de Santiago usually cover between 30 and 60 km a day, at an average of 11 km per hour. This distance lets you enjoy the route without rushing and make the most of the trip both physically and emotionally.

To get the most out of your cycling experience, we recommend studying the terrain profile and planning the stages in advance. This way you can adjust the difficulty to your pace and avoid overexerting yourself.

Is luggage transfer included?

Yes, we pick up your luggage every morning and drop it off at your next accommodation so you can travel light and worry-free. If you prefer, you can ride with panniers instead of a backpack, so your back doesn’t suffer as much as it would walking.

What gear should I bring for the Camino by bike?

Don’t forget to bring: comfortable cycling clothing, suitable shoes, a rain jacket in case it rains, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen, as well as your Credential for collecting stamps and your important documents.

If you do the Camino on one of our bikes, you will carry a puncture repair kit with you and can choose panniers to balance the weight.

How many kilometers do I need to cycle to get the Compostela?

You must cycle at least 200 km along one of the official Caminos and have your Credential properly stamped at least twice a day.

Can I do the Camino by bike with children?

Yes, you can do it with children, taking into account their age and stamina. The most suitable routes for children are the French Way and the Portuguese Way.

Can I cycle the Camino in a group or with my family?

Of course. We organise trips for solo cyclists as well as couples, families and groups of friends. Our group cycling packages for the Camino de Santiago offer the best of the Camino by bike, plus a support vehicle that can carry bikes, a welcome briefing and dinners. Get in touch!

Which route do you recommend for my first time on the Camino de Santiago?

The French Way is perfect for a first time thanks to its infrastructure, signposting and moderate climbs.

Another option is the Portuguese Coastal Way, as it follows the Atlantic coastline and has less elevation gain.
